Discovered by Columbus in 1492, Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola which it shares with the Dominican Republic. During it’s long European colonization, Haiti was considered the richest colony of the French empire. Today, this Caribbean nation hosts a population of 11.5 million people and is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Years of devastating deforestation, political unrest, and natural disasters have ravaged this once vibrant land.
